Our History

Msgr. McClancy Memorial High School is a private, Catholic, secondary school owned and operated by the Brothers of the Sacred Heart of the New York Province since its opening in 1956.

One of many schools staffed by the Brothers of the Sacred Heart and dedicated priest, sisters and lay people throughout the world, Msgr. McClancy High School is located in the East Elmhurst - Jackson Heights area of Queens, New York. We have served boys from the dioceses of Brooklyn, Rockville Center, and the Archdiocese of New York for the past 40+ years.

A New York State Certified School, Msgr. McClancy High School is also a member of the Middle States Association of Secondary Schools.

Historically, only the second Catholic high school built for boys in the Borough of Queens, the school honors the memory of Msgr. Joseph V. McClancy, a long time diocesan Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Brooklyn. In 1956, at the request of the Diocesan bishop, Archbishop Thomas E. Molloy, the new school was opened as Msgr. McClancy Memorial High School in honor of this priestly, energetic, scholarly man who contributed so much to Catholic Education.

The Charism of the Brothers

The mission of Msgr. McClancy is based on the Charism received through Father Andre Coindre, founder of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in Lyon, France in 1821.

Charism is special gift of the Holy Spirit given to the Church through special people to help its members fulfill the special needs of the people of God.

The charism of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart directs the Brothers, other religious and lay collaborators in the apostolate of Christian education of young people. It is a charism founded on the love of young people, a respect for their potential, and their need to be educated to live in the world of today. By challenging them to develop values, which are fully human and wholly Christian, we provide them with an education which will develop them personally and professionally. The faculty and staff of McClancy prepare our young people to meet the challenges of life in today's world.

History

Msgr. McClancy High School is located in East Elmhurst, New York.  It is conducted by the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, who have been active in American education since 1846 when they arrived in Mobile, Alabama, from Lyons, France.  With roots in the South this religious congregation of men grew throughout the States and had its greatest flowering in Canada and the Eastern States.  At present there are more than 2,000 Brothers in North America and in missions around the globe serving in the ministry of education.

Msgr. McClancy High School was opened in 1956.  The Brothers named the school in memory of Msgr. Joseph V. McClancy, former Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Brooklyn, who had given much encouragement to the Brothers’ work in education until his death in 1954.
